Adopt a Black Labrador Retriever / Hound / Mixed (medium coat)

Petey is healthy and flourishing in a safe setting after a life of neglect. But it hasn't affected his happy disposition and temperament.  He has a  goofy, lab personality and it's showing itself more and more each day. He will need someone who is patient and willing to teach him the basics. Petey has a BIG personality and will need an active owner. He is smart and learns quickly though will need someone who is not afraid of a challenge and enjoys big, silly, super friendly dogs. He loves to lie on soft sofas and laps. He is a chewer so will need some assistance in learning that only dog toys are for chewing. Petey is very people friendly but interacting with other dogs on or off leash is a new skill for him. He definitely prefers the company of people over dogs. He has done very well at a dog training camp. Under the supervision of his trainer and being in a calm environment has given him the courage to start getting out and meeting other dogs. His trainers feel he is on the right track and simply needs to build up more confidence when he's around other dogs. In addition he has had several overnight stays at a doggy boarding facility and got along fine with the other laid back, calm dogs. As he has never lived with another dog and is not very interested in hanging out with his own kind, we strongly advise that he be an only dog. He has come a long way from the dog who didn't know how to walk on a leash and would bark at every dog he encountered. He's ready for his forever home! With love, time and training he will be the perfect companion. We feel that his ideal home would have a fenced yard for running, roughhousing and playing fetch and of course hiking. Petey is so much fun to hang out with and loves to play fetch. He will gently hand over the ball if you rub his tummy.
